The Borough of Munhall administers and enforces the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code itself. Its Building and Safety division issues building permits and does field inspections of construction work. Plan reviews and property inspections go through Code Sys, the borough's code inspection agency.
For a teardown, Munhall has its own Demolition Permit, approved by the borough's Code Enforcement Officer. The form asks for the lot and block, proof of liability insurance, the estimated cost and the site's owner. Its notes require a call to the Code Enforcement Office for several inspections along the way.
If something new will go up on the lot, the forms page also lists an Application for Building Permit. We are licensed and insured. When we quote the job, we go over what the borough requires and who handles each step.
Munhall's Demolition Permit lists four inspections. First, the emptied basement is checked for debris. Next, the sewer line is inspected as it is capped, and then the quality of the backfill. The last check confirms the site is clear of debris.
We plan the job around those checks, starting with a basement cleared of debris. The borough will not accept backfill with ground-up wood in it, so wood stays out of the fill. No burning of any kind is allowed on any job site, so all the debris is hauled off. Our debris removal and hauling leaves the site clean before the final check.
In Allegheny County, a covered demolition needs an asbestos survey by a licensed building inspector. The county health department and EPA get notice 10 days before the demolition. Private owners of homes with four or fewer units are exempt, while commercial demolition is covered. The county's rule is that any asbestos comes out before the demolition, removed by an ACHD-licensed contractor.
More than three in four Munhall homes were built before 1960, and about two in three are single-family detached houses. Garage demolition is a staple of our work, whether the garage is frame, block or brick. Out back, shed removal covers sheds, decks, porches and above-ground pools, and concrete removal breaks out old slabs and walks. When a garage is gone, the area can be cleaned up, topsoiled and seeded.
In Munhall, more than one in three occupied homes are rented, and every sale or rental needs an occupancy inspection. A landlord or seller fixing up a house first may start with interior demolition, a gut-out to the studs. Our building background counts here: the walls, pipes and wiring that must stay are left in place. We are an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm, as renovation work that disturbs lead paint in homes built before 1978 requires. That covers most houses in town.
When mortar joints wear out, brick pointing fills them with new mortar, and brick repair replaces broken brick. An old chimney can be repointed, rebuilt or taken down through chimney repair and removal. We build retaining walls for sloped yards in block, brick, stone, poured concrete or timber, railroad ties included. A wall over the height the code sets needs an engineer's design and a permit from the borough.
Munhall became a borough on June 24, 1901, formed from part of Mifflin Township. It is named for John Munhall, the original owner of the town site. Part of the Homestead Steel Works stood here, a mill built in 1881 and bought by Andrew Carnegie in 1883. The plant closed in 1986.
The Pump House by the river was part of the mill and the site of the 1892 Battle of Homestead. In spring through fall it serves as a trailhead for the Great Allegheny Passage, which runs through the borough. Some of the mill's brick stacks still stand in the Waterfront development. The Carnegie Library of Homestead, founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1898, stands in Munhall too.
Homestead borders Munhall to the northwest and West Homestead to the west. Whitaker lies to the east, and West Mifflin to the south and east. Munhall also borders Pittsburgh's Lincoln Place and New Homestead, and faces Swisshelm Park, Swissvale and Rankin across the river. From Pittsburgh, we come out Route 837 from East Carson Street to 8th Avenue in Homestead.

Clinton came quickly after we called him for estimates and ideas on tearing down our huge garage. He gave us a very fair estimate, and upon us signing the contract, the job was started and completed faster than we expected. It was extremely hot through the whole job! Also did a great cleanup/hallway job, topsoil and seeded, done! Would highly recommend. Thank you so much for a job well done, Clinton!Thank your helper for us as well!
We hired Davis Demo to clear out our demo debris and then later hired to repoint our interior masonry and make sure it stayed structurally sound. Shorty was great to work with. He was able to get in and start quickly both times, communicated really well, and we are happy with his work! They even mopped the floor when they were done! Would definitely hire again.
Davis Demolition preformed selective interior demolition on a residential home I was remodeling. Their pricing was fair and they worked quickly to get the job done. They were responsive to addressing added scopes of work and easy to work with. I’ll continue using Davis Demo for future demolition needs.
Hired davis demolition to tear down and remove a large shed. They did the job quickly and left the site clean. Also great communication. Would definitely reccomend.
Received a fair quote over the phone, when arrived price did increase slightly due to additional work needed for structure removal. Very easy to work with and extremely helpful. Additionally, Clinton removed some debris unrelated to structure. Left the worksite clean after job. Thank you for your hard work. Definitely would recommend.
Clint has done work for me on multiple occasions. Always goes above and beyond. He is my first call for any work on any of my projects on my personal property or any of my rental properties. Appreciate his dedication to his craft!
